With our frigid weather, West Michigan residents may be going to their favorite salon to get a tan, some Vitamin D and an improved mood this week. The Better Business Bureau recommends you read up thoroughly on the issues of tanning before buying a tanning bed or going to a tanning salon.

The World Health Organization and American Medical Association have come out with statements concerning the dangers of indoor tanning beds, particularly for those under 18 years of age. Skin cancer is a growing concern, and the greatest increase of melanoma skin cancers seems to be occurring among adolescents and young adults, particularly in females.

The American Suntanning Association represents thousands of tanning salons around the country. Their new campaign to promote the safety of sunbeds has been criticized by the American Academy of Dermatology as misleading. The ASA believes in self-regulation and is attempting to get out its side of the story. They say many scientists support a balanced message about Ultra Violet Exposure.

The BBB recommends you read up on the impact of tanning before you do so. Education will assist consumers in making an informed decision.
