MDOT has installed a series of signs that read "do not pass when blinking" along I-96 in Crockery Twp. (March 12, 2013)

CROCKERY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- The Michigan Department of Transportation is trying a new approach to stop drivers from merging late in a construction zone on I-96.

A portion of the freeway is down to one lane as crews work on the new M-231 highway in Ottawa County. MDOT has installed a series of signs on the eastbound lanes that read "do not pass when blinking." They require drivers to merge into the single lane, well before the freeway is reduced to one lane.

MDOT is using the approach to prevent the aggressive driving that sometimes happens during such merges.
