ZEELAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- Zeeland is once again considering easing up its long history of alcohol restrictions. It comes as new owners of a vacant building are planning to open the first brewery downtown.
The new brewery, called Tripel Root, would be located at the former Fifth Third Bank building. The brewery would be the third restaurant and bar to serve alcohol since the Zeeland began allowing it in 2006.
"Nothing bad has happened because of it, some said Zeeland would go down the drain because of it. It hasn't happened and it's flourished," says Zeeland mayor Kevin Klynstra.
Mayor Klynstra says if approved by the city council, the owners of Tripel Root Brewery would hope to open next spring.
Meanwhile, Zeeland City Council is also considering changing its ordinance to allow take-out alcohol for downtown businesses.
