NEWPORT NEWS, VA (WZZM) - A company involved in the construction of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) reports that the final aircraft elevator has been installed.
The Ford has three of the giant elevators that are used to carry aircraft and other equipment from the hangar bay inside the ship to the flight deck. That elevator measures 85 feet long and 52 feet wide and weighs 120 tons.
Huntington Ingalls Industries says the Nimitz class carriers have four elevators, but the Ford will have a larger flight deck because it only has three.
The Ford is scheduled to be christened in November at the Newport News shipyard.
