KEENE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- The effort to rebuild an historic Ionia County Bridge that was destroyed by arson, is moving forward.
Whites Bridge burned down on July 7. Monday, residents removed the bridge debris from the Flat River with the help of a local construction firm.
Pieces of the bridge are being collected and turned into art projects to help raise money for a new bridge. The man leading the effort to rebuild the bridge is optimistic about the future.
"I would like to see this bridge back up here in a year. I don't think it is unrealistic, I think we will have enough support from the community to do it without tax payers dollars," said Paul Phenix.
He believes the bridge can be replaced for less than the initial estimate of $850,000 and hopes by attaching himself to a non-profit, he will be able to raise the necessary funds.
