Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) became popular in the US due to the first UFC where Royce Gracie beat much larger fighters that were experts in other martial arts, using jiu jitsu. Jiu Jitsu is literally translated as "The Gentle Art" because it makes effective use of techniques that use leverage rather than strength to attack the weak areas of an opponent without the need to strike or kick.
Demonstration: Arm Bar
One of the things that makes BJJ so effective is that "sparring" can be done "live" or at full speed with a much lower probability of injury than found in the Striking martial arts. Plus since nearly every attack or fight lands on the ground, jiu jitsu is the most practical form of self-defense.
Demonstration: Rear Collar Choke
Jiu Jitsu is arguably the best martial art for children & women to learn as its focus isn't to be the biggest or strongest, but the smartest and most technical. And it's an incredible workout!
