HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- Holland leaders approved a new ordinance Wednesday night allowing residents to own bees within city limits.
The council voted eight to one in favor; that is in spite of the fact that the Holland Planning Commission did not approve the change in June.

Other cities have made a similar decision to allow residents to keep bees on their residential properties.
Advocates for the change said the beekeeping could help keep the population of honey bees in West Michigan from shrinking more. Opponents say the bees could be a nuisance for neighbors and for the local bee population.
