GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Firefighters rescued a man and woman from the Grand River after their kayaks overturned. The rescue happened around 5:30 p.m. Friday downtown, underneath the Bridge Street Bridge.
One of the kayakers tells WZZM 13 he and a girl were in separate kayaks, and they both capsized after going over a small damn near Bridge Street.
Grand Rapids Fire Battalion Chief Bart Perry says fire crews arrived to find the man and woman standing in the water beneath the bridge. Perry says the firefighters rescued the victims and moved them to the west shore of the river.
Firefighters till WZZM 13 neither was wearing a life jacket. They were taken to the hospital for observation.
