LEROY TOWNSHIP - WEBBERVILLE - - Authorities are investigating an Wednesday morning accident on Interstate 96 in which an 89-year-old man was killed while driving the wrong way on the expressway.
Lee Carl Woodbury, of Orleans in Ionia County, was traveling I-96 around 3 a.m. when his 2011 red Chevrolet Cruze was going the wrong way on I-96 when he collided with a westbound semi, said Sgt. Robert Ott of the Ingham County Sheriff's Office. The accident occurred at an overpass just after the Webberville exit.
Ott said the semi driver, a Pennsylvania man, tried avoiding Woodbury's vehicle. The semi driver, who was not identified, was treated and released from Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.
Authorities closed down I-96 for several hours to clean up fluid from both vehicles. Traffic was diverted onto the Webberville exit and was allowed to rejoin I-96 beyond the accident. I-96 was re-opened about 1:30 p.m
Ott said when he was working road patrol the sheriff's office would often field calls about drivers going the wrong way on the interstate. Most of the drivers, he said, were people who didn't live in the area.
