GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- It's no secret that Grand Rapids relies on its public transportation.
That's why the Rapid was recognized Tuesday with a national award.
Members of the American Public Transportation Association were in Grand Rapids Tuesday to announce that The Rapid has been recognized as the most outstanding midsize transportation sysem in the United States. It beat out 78 other mid-size cities to win the honor.
Criteria is determined by ridership growth, operational efficiency, financial stability and environmental sustainability.
It's projected that The Rapid's ridership will grow to nearly 13 million by the end of this year.
"When you look across the nation, we're seeing a renaissance with people riding transit in record numbers," says Michael Melaniphy, who is the president and CEO of the American Public Transportation Association. "To win this award, not only do you have to do everything right, you have to do it right and better, and that's what they've done here at The Rapid."
The Rapid will officially receive the national award in Chicago on October 1st.
