KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) - Two people are dead after two separate crashes on a Cooper Township road.
The first crash happened at about 4:30am on Douglas Avenue near Lanfair Street.
Theobald Metzer, 55, of Kalamazoo, was driving a 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle southbound on Douglas, when he hit a deer in the middle of the road. Metzer was killed in the crash. He was wearing a helmet.
A short time later, another vehicle heading southbound on Douglas came across Metzer and his motorcycle lying in the roadway. That driver, Edmund Janke, 78, of Otsego, swerved to avoid Metzer and lost control of his vehicle, a 1997 Saturn, which then overturned, ejecting him. He was killed instantly at the scene. Police say he wasn't wearing a seatbelt.
Deputies say that speed was not a factor in either crash. It is unknown at this time if alcohol was involved in either crash.
