Brian Ellis - Tuesday 10/8
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Rep. Justin Amash will have a Republican challenger in the GOP Primary.
Local businessman Brian Ellis of Brooktree Capital Management announced his candidacy Tuesday morning in Grand Rapids. Ellis is also an East Grand Rapids school board member.
Ellis says that Justin Amash is not representing "conservative republicans" in the 3rd district. He says US Rep. Amash isn't tough enough on spending, and doesn't defend the Right to Life and our Constitution. He says that West Michigan deserves to be represented by a true social and fiscal conservative. Ellis doesn't agree with many of Amash's votes. "When Amash voted against the Paul Ryan budget, that would cut spending by $5 trillion dollars and against a 20% tax cut for small businesess, he took a bad vote. He voted no. I would have voted yes."
The Washington Post recently reported that mainstream Republicans are becoming impatient with Tea Party-style governance and are looking for candidates who can work within the system.
Rep. Amash has been a favorite with the Tea Party and Libertarians. In response to the news of a Republican challenger, the Amash campaign said, quote, "It's bizarre. Let's just say we're not worried."
