MACATAWA, Mich. (WZZM) -- 50 years of Holland history is being torn down in just two days, but it's part of a bigger project to highlight an international sporting event.
The Macatawa Bay Yacht Club is planning to rebuild and expand the clubhouse to keep up with growing demand for sailing competitions. Because the clubhouse is under a flood plain, the new building will be raised three feet to meet federal requirements.
Club leaders say sailors come from Brazil, Venezuela, and even Australia. "You have to be able to accommodate more people that come into town which is good for our economy, they need places to stay overnight, but also to stay here and eat while they're sailing," says Jeff Elhart, Vice Commodore, Macatawa Bay Yacht Club.
Demolition will continue on Thursday. The new clubhouse is expected to open in May.
