Williams apologized to her victims and their families in in court Tuesday
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - A former Grand Rapids Public Schools teacher will spend years in prison for having sex with four male students, ages 15 and 16.
Jamila Williams was sentenced Tuesday afternoon after pleading no contest to four counts of criminal sexual conduct last month. The incidents happened while she was a teacher at Grand Rapids University Prep Academy.
A no contest plea isn't an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing.
Williams was sentenced to 8-15 years on three counts of CSC and 5-15 years on a fourth count of second degree CSC. The sentences will be served concurrently.
In addition, Williams was ordered to register as a sex offender and was banned from having contact with any of the victims. A judge also ordered her to pay court fees and undergo HIV testing and counseling.
Williams apologized and asked for forgiveness but said she didn't "prey on" the boys. Judge Paul Sullivan says the harm Williams brought to the school, students and her family is "incalculable."
Celebrity attorney Gloria Allred has been supporting the victims in this case and spoke at the courthouse following sentencing. Allred says they may file a civil suit against the school for not acting fast enough. They are giving the school the option to make changes first.
