(LUDINGTON DAILY NEWS) - An Ohio couple's trip to Ludington's North Breakwater Lighthouse nearly turned tragic Tuesday when the woman and her wheelchair rolled into the cold water.
When Joanne Burkhart, 61, of Rootstown, Ohio, initially entered the water, a witness said her husband, Walter Burkhart, 68, went into the water too to try to push her up onto the rocks that line the breakwater.
A Chicago couple who were nearby helped the Burkharts, with Fred Strubin getting in the water too to help get Joanne completely out of the water while Debbie Strubin tried to call 911 and eventually reached emergency responders after running back to shore.
Ludington Police Chief Mark Barnett said the incident occurred when Walter Burkhart let go of Joanne's wheelchair to take a photo. At that point a gust of wind pushed the chair onto the area of breakwater that angles down, and when the chair hit the bottom section both it and Joanne tumbled into the water.
