GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Strong winds that knocked out power to thousands of homes and businesses in West Michigan Thursday night also churned up high waves on Lake Michigan.
Visitors were out at Grand Haven State Park Friday morning to watch waves crashing up and over the North Channel pier. The waves were also rolling into the channel, making for wet and slippery conditions on both piers.
Grand Haven Public Safety officers are asking visitors to keep off the piers and watch and take pictures from a safe distance away.
Consumers Energy reported more than 14,000 of its customers are without power. The outages closed four schools and put Murray Lake Elementary school in Lowell on a two hour delay.
Restoration times are expected to be affected by the weather, with winds continuing Friday.
