GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- President Obama has chosen Mayor George Heartwell as a member of his Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience.
The group's responsibility is to advise the administration on how the federal government can respond to the needs of communities nationwide that are dealing with extreme weather and other climate impacts.
President Obama established the Task Force Friday as part of his Climate Action Plan to cut carbon pollution and prepare communities for the impacts of climate chang and also to lead international efforts to address this global challenge.
Mayor Heartwell will use his first-hand experience in addressing local climate impacts to inform the Task Force's recommendations to the President and ensure that they are responsive to the needs of places like the City of Grand Rapids.
"I consider it a high honor to be asked to serve on this important task force," said Heartwell in a written statement. "Grand Rapids has distinguished itself among American cities for our aggressive work on climate protection and climate change resiliency. Appointment by the President to the task force will ensure that our experience influences the national agenda on climate change and resiliency."
Grand Rapids has taken action to protect the city and residents from flooding extreme heat.
