Grand Rapids (WZZM)- If you were a betting person, Grand Rapids Gymnastics would have brought you good odds at the Derby Classic Gymnastics Meet the weekend of March 5th. There were 48 teams from 12 different states competing in the USAG competition. GRG had many notable individual achievements.

Sabrina Bowen, Level 7, took first place in the all around competition with a 37.100. But it was her vault score that wowed the crowd. Sabrina scored a 9.70 which placed her tied for 56th in the country for 2011 America's Top 100 Level 7 Vault Scores.

Not to be outdone, Taylor Griffith also won the all around competition for her age group as a level 6 with a 37.225. That score has Taylor currently 98th on the America's Top 100 Level 6 All Around Scores. Taylor's highest individual score was a 9.60 for the floor routine putting her 27th on America's Top 100.

But the award Grand Rapids Gymnastics took home far exceeded any individual achievement. Each year, the Derby Classic awards one team the Hurst Trophy. "Our most prestigious award is the Hurst Trophy, awarded each year to the team that exhibits the best presentation of sportsmanship, enthusiasm, and love of the sport.  And the winner of the Hurst Trophy was Grand Rapids Gymnastics. "That's what it's all about at GRG! We've been teaching the kids all year about supporting your teammates and having fun - do that and the individual successes will come" said Shane Uson, head coach and owner of Grand Rapids Gymnastics. Way to represent Michigan GRG!
