New York, NY (Sports Network) - Saturday's Major League Soccer match between
Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Real Salt Lake has been postponed due to unplayable
conditions at Empire Field.
A temporary grass field was installed this week ahead of Vancouver's friendly
against English Premier League side Manchester City, but consistent rain and
limited drainage at the Whitecaps' stadium led to the postponement.
"We have been working around the clock to do everything in our powers to keep
the field as dry as possible," said Paul Barber, Vancouver Whitecaps FC chief
executive officer. "Unfortunately, the combination of consistent rain and
limited drainage options available for a temporary grass field has left us no
other choice but to postpone [Saturday's] match."
The match has not yet been rescheduled. Monday's match against Manchester City
is still expected to be played, according to Barber.
