Lake Forest, IL (Sports Network) - Stroke-play medalist Brad Valois advanced
to the second round of match play on Monday with a 2 & 1 victory over Kevin
Wolf at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
Valois will face Charlie Blanchard in Tuesday's second round after Blanchard
needed one extra hole to eliminate Dan Crockett at Conway Farms Golf Club.
Valois, 25, lost the first two holes on Monday, but the match got close.
Valois took a 1-up lead after the eighth hole and Wolf squared it up at the
very next hole.
Wolf won the 13th to go 1-up, but Valois knotted it with a birdie and a win at
the 14th. Valois won the 16th and 17th holes with pars and that was enough to
move on to round two.
Three-time champion Nathan Smith defeated Paul Simson, 2 & 1 on Monday to set
up a second-round match with Jeff Murphy, who needed four extra holes to knock
off Edward Richardson of England.
