West Caldwell, NJ (Sports Network) - Defending champion Louis Lee advanced to
the quarterfinals of the USGA Senior Amateur Championship with a pair of wins
on Tuesday.
Lee defeated Jay Blumenfeld, 6 & 4, in a second-round matchup before
dispatching Donald Detweiler, 3 & 2, in the third round at Mountain Ridge
Country Club.
Tuesday's wins eared Lee a quarterfinal date with Jim Knoll, who downed Steven
Ford, 3 & 2, in the third round.
Paul Simson reached the quarterfinals of this event for the second straight
year when he defeated Joe Russo, 2 & 1, on Tuesday. Simson, a 2010 champion
at this event, advanced to face Stephen Sharpe, who help off Gerardo Ramirez,
1-up, in the third round. Ramirez ousted stroke-play medalist Jim Holtgrieve
earlier in the day.
Douglas Hanzel, a low amateur who completed 72 holes at the 2012 U.S. Senior
Open, defeated Randal Lewis, 4 & 3, in the third round. He will face Pat
O'Donnell, a 1-up winner over James Pearson.
Steve Golliher, a 3 & 2 third-round victor over Gary Hardin, awaits the winner
between Graham Cooke and Curtis Skinner.
Cooke and Skinner were all square through 18 holes when their match was
suspended. They will resume play on Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. (et).
The quarterfinals and semifinals are also set for Wednesday and the 18-hole
final is slated for Thursday.
