Newaygo, Mich. (WZZM) The Newaygo Lions are not used to such success. A program that did not win a single game in 2009 and 2010 is two wins away from playing at Ford Field in the state championship game.

"The community's been awesome," says first-year head coach Andy Bush. "The support for these guys, I teach middle school science and all the little twelve and thirteen year old's in the middle school just love them. So it's really cool to see it all across the board."

The love-fest reached new heights last Friday night when Newaygo pulled off its biggest win of the season shocking previously unbeaten Reed City 30-29 on the road. The Lions had lost to the Coyotes earlier this season 35-7. The team was given an escort complete with a fire truck as it returned to town around 11:00. "It's built a lot of confidence in the kids and that's probably what I'm most happy with."

The challenges continue this Friday night as the Lions travel to Grand Rapids to face red-hot West Catholic, a winner of seven straight. "They're a great team, they have great coaches," says Bush. "They have good kids, good players. So do we. We look forward to the matchup. This is one of those games that's a big game for Newaygo football and I think we're definitely right there. We have to do things right. West Catholic has a ton of talent, a ton of weapons. They're physical, fast kids. But we've spent a lot of time this week getting ready for it and that's the level of football we want to be at."

Join Tom Clyde, Dan Harland and Brent Ashcroft this Friday night for the season finale of "13 On Your Sidelines" for highlights and reaction from the Newaygo-West Catholic game at 11:15.
