WMU fired head football coach Bill Cubit just hours after the Broncos lost their 2012 season finale, 29-23 to Eastern Michigan.
Cubit spent the last eight seasons at Western, finishing with a record of 51-47. He led the Broncos to three bowl appearances, including the Little Caesars Bowl in 2011.
Western was a preseason pick to finish near the top of the MAC West, but finished with Cubit's worst conference record (2-6) since arriving in Kalamazoo.
Cubit ends his tenure with the fifth most wins in WMU history and the second most MAC wins (36) in program history.
Western says a national search for the program's 15th head coach will begin immediately.
Cubit had a year remaining on his contract.
