London, England (Sports Network) - World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and former
top-ranked star Serena Williams were honored Tuesday as the 2012 International
Tennis Federation world champions.
The 25-year-old Djokovic won for the second year in a row after capturing the
Australian Open and season-ending ATP World Tour Finals and finishing as a
runner-up at the French and U.S. Opens. The Serbian star tallied six titles
overall this past season.
The 31-year-old Williams secured the ITF honor for the third time in her
career. Her 2012 season included titles at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, London
Olympic Games and season-ending WTA Championships. The American great
led the tour with seven titles and a brilliant 58-4 record.
American twin brothers Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan were named men's doubles world
champs for the ninth time in 10 years, while Italians Sara Errani and Roberta
Vinci were honored as women's doubles champions.
Canada's Filip Peliwo and American Taylor Townsend were named junior world
champions for the year.
