Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Kevin Van Wijk's career-high 31 points was
enough to lift the Valparaiso Crusaders to an 89-88 win over the Detroit
Titans in a Horizon League clash at Calihan Hall.
Ryan Broekhoff helped out with 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists while
connecting on all eight of his free-throw attempts. Matt Kenney scored 12
points as Valpo (14-5, 4-1 Horizon) snapped the Titans' 17-game home win
Detroit (11-7, 3-2) lost despite a career-high 36 points by Nick Minnerath
on 12-of-17 from the floor and 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Doug Anderson was
efficient as well, scoring 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting and Jason Calliste
netted 14 points. Ray McCallum had eight assists and seven boards.
The first half belonged to Detroit as the home team shot 67.7 percent from the
field and led 50-32 at intermission.
Valpo chipped away at the deficit and trailed 73-64 after Van Wijk hit back-
to-back jumpers midway through the frame. The Crusaders continued to battle
and, despite trailing by 12 with 5:14 left, managed to take their first lead
of the game on Broekhoff free throws with just 17 seconds remaining. The
Titans got a look at the basket in the final moments but a 3-pointer from
Minnerath didn't fall and Valpo held on for the improbable victory.
The Crusaders scored 17 second-chance points while holding Detroit to just
six. Valpo improved to 12-8 all-time over the Titans.
