Michigan ranked #1 in mens hoops

(DETROIT FREE PRESS) - Michigan is No. 1 in the Associated Press college basketball poll for the first time since 1992.

The Wolverines received 51 first-place votes today, far outdistancing No. 2 Kansas, which had 13.

Michigan State remained No. 13 after splitting its games last week.

However, U-M was No. 2 in today's new USA Today coaches poll. Both it and new No. 1 Kansas moved up one spot from their positions last week.

Here's what U-M coach John Beilein's said Sunday night about possibly being ranked No. 1 today: "Here's where it is: It's Jan. 27, and not one of you can remember who was No. 1 last Jan. 27. To our team, that really does not make a big difference. To our fans, water coolers and coffee shops, that's probably something they hate or they love right now. Our big thing is, let's keep getting better."
