MATTAWAN, Mich. (AP) - Two dozen people have stepped up to publicly support a high school basketball coach in southwestern Michigan who was fired for his aggressive style with players.
Dan Hoff's supporters Monday night included Western Michigan University coach Steve Hawkins and state Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker. It was the first school board meeting since Dan Hoff was dismissed as basketball coach after 27 years at Mattawan High School.
Documents obtained by the Kalamazoo Gazette show Hoff was accused of verbally abusing players, throwing a basketball at a player and using other techniques that were found unacceptable by school officials.
The newspaper says Hoff didn't attend the meeting, but his wife, Lynnette Brown, read a three-page statement. She says her husband was dismissed based on "shockingly incomplete" information.
