GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- The Midwest Wheelchair Championships for tennis started Thursday. It's an international competition that has drawn some of the highest ranking wheelchair tennis players in the world.

Sixty-five athletes are competing for international ranking points. They come from all over -- including Nigeria, Canada, England, and the United States.

Many of these players are preparing for the next Paralympics.

One of the events is up-down or run-roll tennis. That is when there is one able bodied and one wheelchair athlete on each team for a match.

"Tennis is tennis no matter who you are, no matter if you play in a chair or if you are standing up. And that's the great things about wheelchair tennis is that it's one of the only sports you can play with your able bodied friends, your spouse, your kids," says Lynn Bender, tournament director.

The event is being held at the Orchard Hills Tennis Center. Athletes are encouraged to bring their families to the competition and make it more than just about tennis.
