Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - The Kansas City Royals claimed infielder
Pedro Ciriaco off waivers from the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.
Ciriaco will be playing with his third different team this season when he
joins the Royals following the All-Star break. The utilityman played in 28
games with the Boston Red Sox before being traded to San Diego in June, then
was designated for assignment by the Padres last week following a 23-game
The 27-year-old batted .228 with two home runs and eight RBI between the two
clubs, but was a contributor for the Red Sox a season ago. In 76 games with
Boston last year, Ciriaco posted a .293 average with two homers, 19 RBI and a
career-best 16 stolen bases while earning starts at five different positions
(third base, second base, shortstop, left field, center field).
Ciriaco, who broke into the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2010, is a
career .279 hitter with four homers and 26 steals over 158 major league games.
