Jim Harbaugh and Jim McElwain are going to find out what each other's team looks like Saturday afternoon in Texas.
Speaking with reporters in Ann Arbor today, Michigan's head coach said he has no plans to announce his starting quarterback for Saturday's season-opener against the Gators (3:30 p.m., WZZM 13).
Why? Because he doesn't have to. And because Florida hasn't either.
"I have not heard Florida announce who their starting quarterback will be. We'd love to have that information," Harbaugh said. "So, no, we're not announcing our starting quarterback.
"People have made a big deal about our roster or not announcing a starting quarterback. I have not seen a starting quarterback (announced at) Florida. Never any mention of that. Very interesting."
Earlier this month, Harbaugh said the quarterback battle had come down to returning starter Wilton Speight and fifth-year senior backup John O'Korn. Redshirt freshman Brandon Peters was in the mix when camp began, but Speight and O'Korn appeared to separate themselves as time wore on.
Speight threw for 2,538 yards, 18 touchdowns and 7 interceptions in 12 starts last year. He was No. 2 in the Big Ten in completion percentage at 61.6. O'Korn started one game (vs. Indiana) due to Speight's shoulder injury. For the year, he appeared in eight games, going 20 of 34 for 173 yards and 2 touchdowns.
McElwain, meanwhile, has also refused to announce a starter -- going as far as saying that three quarterbacks (Malik Zaire, Feleipe Franks and Luke Del Rio) could all see time against the Wolverines.
Michigan, meanwhile, is in the same boat.
Harbaugh's not revealing his starting quarterback. But he does know who will be under center when the first snap happens Saturday in Arlington, Texas.
"It's a meritocracy, there's competition that's healthy and fair and productive. It's been very good. It's been a good camp for our quarterbacks," Harbaugh said. "We feel confident in our guys. We believe in them.
"We're working on it. It's been formulated and we've communicated (our plan to the quarterbacks)."
