Michigan remains No. 4 in AP poll; WMU ranked for first time

The Michigan football team remained No. 4 in the Associated Press poll after its 78-0 whipping of Rutgers on Saturday.

All three teams ahead of the 6-0 Wolverines -- Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson -- won as well, leaving the top group unchanged from last week.

But the Big Ten now has four teams in the top 10 during the regular season for the first time since 1960. No. 8 Wisconsin and No. 10 Nebraska joined No. 2 Ohio State and No. 4 Michigan in the first 10.

And No. 24 Western Michigan is ranked for the first time in school history.

Last week, Michigan received one first-place vote. It ascended to the top 5 in the AP Poll in Week 2, moved to No. 4 in Week 3 and has remained there since.

On Saturday, the Wolverines completed their most decisive win since 1939, rushing for 481 yards and compiling 600 yards of total offense. Rutgers was forced to punt 16 times.

The AP poll and the Amway Coaches poll run by USA TODAY were delayed a day this week because Hurricane Matthew pushed the Georgia vs. South Carolina game to Sunday.

The Wolverines are on a bye this week before hosting Illinois at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 22. The television network for that game has not yet been announced.
