John Engler names Bill Beekman as Michigan State's interim athletic director

EAST LANSING, MICH. - Not even a week onto the job, John Engler is making his presence felt as Michigan State’s interim president.

Engler appointed Bill Beekman as the university’s interim athletic director, according to a news release issued Monday, and MSU will not hire a permanent athletic director from within the school’s athletic department.

That is a change of direction from what two university sources told the Free Press last week shortly before the MSU Board of Trustees appointed Engler to his position.

Beekman has no experience in athletic management. He replaces Mark Hollis, who retired abruptly on Jan. 26. amid the Larry Nassar scandal and shortly before an ESPN report outlined allegations of violence against women by members of MSU's football and men's basketball programs.

Engler said a nationwide search will begin shortly for a permanent athletic director and that no internal candidates will be considered.

“Just as the Board of Trustees had confidence in Bill to keep things moving as acting president, I have confidence that he will provide very capable leadership of the athletic department during this time of transition,” Engler said in a release.

Beekman has been vice president and secretary of the MSU Board of Trustees since 2008 and previously served as executive director of the MSU Alumni Association.

“I am honored to receive this appointment and look forward to this new challenge,” Beekman said in a release. “This is obviously a new day at MSU and I am pleased to be part of the changes.”

According to Beekman's bio, the 1989 MSU graduate was hired by his alma mater in 1995 as an administrator with the MSU HealthTeam and was assistant dean for finance and planning in the College of Human Medicine.

Beekman will remain vice president and secretary of the Board of Trustees, according to the release.
