Michigan vs. MSU draws strong TV ratings despite obstacles

EAST LANSING, MICH. - The Michigan football team draws eyeballs.

Michigan's 32-23 win over Michigan State on Saturday in East Lansing was expected to be a blowout and looked that way for three quarters.

But people still watched.

According to numbers released today by ESPN PR, the game got a 3.1 overnight rating, the best Saturday overnight on ESPN this season.

It also was the second-best among Saturday's games on all networks, close behind the Clemson vs. Florida State game on ABC on Saturday night.

That's an impressive feat, considering that U-M/MSU game:

• Was in the least desirable national spot -- noon on the East Coast

• Featured two teams in the same state with the same TV markets

• Had a team (MSU) that was only 2-5 coming into the game.

The game also featured a top-10 streaming audience ever for a regular-season college football game on the network.
