New coaches poll: Michigan up to No. 4, MSU drops out, WMU enters

Michigan's top-10 win over Wisconsin was enough to push the Wolverines in a prime poll position -- sitting No. 4 in the new Amway Coaches Poll.

The Wolverines' 14-7 win over then-No. 8 Wisconsin slid them past Louisville, which had been No. 4 but lost to No. 3 Clemson on Saturday night. Louisville fell only to eighth.

This continues to be U-M's highest ranking since the 2006 season, when the Wolverines sat No. 3 entering the Rose Bowl against Southern California.

Michigan State, which lost to Indiana, fell out of the poll while Western Michigan entered for the first time, at No. 25, after thrashing rival Central Michigan, 49-10.

A No. 4 ranking has become more important in the college football world in recent years because of the four-team playoff to determine the national champion. While neither the coaches poll nor the Associated Press poll determines those spots -- the College Football Playoff committee releases its own rankings starting in November -- U-M (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) is being perceived as an elite team.

Michigan also ranks No. 4 in the Football Writers Association of America-National Football Foundation Super 16 poll

The Spartans (2-2, 0-2 Big Ten), ranked No. 16 last week in the coaches poll, are unranked for the first time since the middle of the 2013 season. The Spartans have finished three straight seasons in the top 6 of the final Associated Press poll.
