Western Michigan blows away Central Michigan, 49-10

MT. PLEASANT, MICH. - Zach Terrell threw for three touchdowns, and Corey Davis became the Mid-American Conference’s all-time leader in career receiving yards as Western Michigan remained undefeated by beating rival Central Michigan, 49-10, on Saturday night.

Terrell threw for 170 yards for the Broncos (5-0, 1-0 MAC), and Davis had 72 yards and two touchdowns.

Jarvion Franklin — who had 132 yards rushing — ran for two scores in the first half, and Terrell threw a scoring pass to Michael Henry to give the Broncos a 21-3 halftime lead. They cruised from there.

“I told them that we didn’t play well enough and that we have to take a long, hard look at it and come in (Sunday) with our big boy pants on,” CMU coach John Bonamego said. “We have to address some things in a manly way and man up. There is not going to be any finger pointing. There is not going to be excuses, because excuses don’t get you anywhere. We don’t tolerate excuses.”

Western Michigan receiver Carrington Thompson was hit high by Central Michigan’s Otis Kearny after a 22-yard reception late in the second quarter. He was slow to get up, took two steps and collapsed before being helped off the field. He did not return.

Cooper Rush threw for 178 yards and a score for the Chippewas (3-2, 0-1).

“We just didn’t execute,” said Rush, who completed 17 of his 29 pass attempts. “I didn’t get rid of the ball quick enough; a lot of coverage sacks. Hats off to them, they played faster than us tonight.”

The game had the second-largest crowd ever (30,411) at Kelly-Shorts Stadium, behind CMU's loss to Michigan State (35,127) in 2012. Western Michigan has won five of the last six against Central Michigan.
