Addix All-Star Game set to return next summer

The Football Addix All-Star game is set to return next summer June 9 at the New Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex at Davenport.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Following the success of the inaugural Addix All-Star High School Football Game in June, creators of the event along with area high school coaches and event sponsors gathered at Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids Wednesday, Oct. 5, to announce details regarding the second annual event. The 2017 game, featuring top seniors nominated through an online process and selected by West Michigan sports reporters, will be played on June 9 at Davenport University’s Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.

Once again, the game will generate awareness and funds for Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids. Proceeds will support the free cancer and grief programs offered through Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids.  Last year’s event raised $20,000.

Student-athletes, who will graduate in 2017, will have the opportunity to be nominated as participants in the game through an online process at  The head coach of each student-athlete must confirm the nomination for the athlete to be eligible for selection. A team of sports reporters from West Michigan will select players, who will be assigned to one of two teams, the Stars, or the Stripes. Player nominations must be submitted before 11:59 p.m. on February 1, 2017.

New for 2017 will be the inclusion of two West Michigan cheerleading teams. Also, the game’s creators are looking to include an area high school marching band to perform during pregame and halftime. Before the game, a memory walk and other activities will be held supporting and honoring individuals who are currently on or have previously been on a cancer journey, or have died from cancer.

“Following the success and feedback surrounding the inaugural Addix All-Star Game, it became clear that the game should continue and become a tradition for high school football enthusiasts here in West Michigan,” said Ryan Henderson, president of Football Addix and co-creator of the all-star game. “Not only did we highlight some of the area’s top athletes, but the players and fans had an opportunity to learn about the services offered through Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids.”

The football teams will be coached by Irv Sigler and Jon Shillito, who combined have garnered more than 450 wins during their high school coaching careers.

Team Stars will be led by Sigler, who coached high school football at Belding and Forest Hills Northern and college football at Olivet College. He will be assisted by defensive coordinator Craig Tibbe and his staff from Hudsonville Unity Christian and offensive coordinator Ben Burke and his staff from Allendale High School. The Lowell High School cheerleaders, coached by Amanita Farhni, will provide support to the Stars’ players and fans.

Shillito, who currently coaches at Zeeland West and previously coached at Comstock Park, Muskegon Orchard View and East Kentwood, will lead Team Stripes. Shillito will be joined by defensive coordinator Tim Burrill and the Caledonia High School coaching staff, along with offensive coordinator Tim Swore and the Northpointe Christian High School coaching staff. Team Stripes’ players and fans will be cheered on by the Grandville Bulldog cheerleaders.

Media Day for the Football Addix All Star Game has been tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m. June 1. Practices for the teams will run from June 5 through June 8 at Davenport University. Student athletes will be required to furnish their own equipment, while game jerseys and additional gear will be provided by Football Addix.

“We are honored to be the beneficiary of Football Addix All-Star Game,” said Wendy Wigger, president of Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids. “We are thankful the event’s co-creators, Ryan Henderson and Noel Dean, have recognized the community’s need for the services we provide and are helping to raise awareness.”
