West Catholic aims for 5-peat

West Catholic one win away from fifth straight state title

It hasn't been easy but West Catholic is back in the MHSAA Division 5 championship game.

The Falcons held off Portland in the Region final then overcame a 21-12 halftime deficit against Frankenmuth last week to punch their ticket back to Ford Field.

The Falcons will play at 4:30 pm on Saturday at Ford Field against Saginaw Swan Valley

West Catholic showed their championship resolve in both wins and head coach Joe Hyland says they'll have to play even better to beat the Vikings.

"I think the bracket worked out where the two best teams in division five are playing right now," Hyland said. "If we don't play our best then they're going to get after us. It's going to take our very best effort to have a chance to win this game."

The Falcons have more big game experience than most programs, especially their seniors. Quarterback Gaetano Vallone, defensive back Connor Bolthouse, linebacker Nathaniel Mitchell and kicker Liam Putz were all varsity players as freshman, which means they've played a part in three straight championships and could win their fourth title in four years this Saturday.

"It'd mean a lot to us (seniors), our team and our community," said Vallone. "It'd be really big for our program and the West Catholic community.
