Highlights from West Catholic vs. Portland

PORTLAND, MICH. - Grand Rapids West Catholic continues its drive for a fifth straight state title after 28 to 26 win over Portland High in the Regional Final Friday night.

Gaetono Vallone ran for two score and threw for another to lead the Falcons.

Portland took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on a reverse to Gavin Dennany who snuck into the end zone for a 21 yard touchdown. A few plays later West Catholic Vallone connected with Nick Dorato for a 59 yard touchdown pass to even the score.

Vallone's first touchdown run made it 14-7 with 1:39 left in the half. Portland was able to answer before the half when Austin Allison found Dennany in the endzone for a 30 yard scoring strike tieing the game at 14 with :01 left in the half.

Portland's opening drive of the second half ended on a missed field goal. Vallone would make the Raiders pay with his second touchdown run of the game and a 21-14 lead after three.

West Catholic expanded the lead on an incredible run by Zack Lee, he was stood up at the line of scrimmage by a defensive lineman breaking that tackle, bursting into the secondary where he used two spin moves to evade defenders on his way to a 67 yard score. That run gave West Catholic a 28-14 lead with 9:20 left in the game.

Portland made it a one score game on their next drive when Allison and Dennany teamed up for their second scoring strike of the game, this time from 51 yards. The extra point was no good, as West Catholic lead 28-20 with 8:29 left.

Portland cut the lead to two with 1:25 left in the game on a sneak by Allison. Allison's two point conversion pass sailed past the intended receiver who was well covered by Falcon defenders.

The Raiders had one more chance after recovering the onside kick. Connor Bolthouse sealed the game for West Catholic intercepting Allison's fourth down pass with :33 seconds left in the game.
