EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Flint Powers Catholic coach Tim Herman spent the season making his team was in the best shape possible.

Saturday, it paid off.

The Chargers broke open a close game with a 17-2 second-half run and went on to beat previously undefeated Zeeland East 62-54 for the Class B title at Michigan State.

"We're probably in the best shape of any team in the state, and these kids hate me for it," Herman said. "But tonight showed why we did it."

Chix coach Mickey Cochran agreed about the reason that his team's season didn't end 28-0.

"I think we just ran out of gas a little bit in the second half," he said. "We've worked hard all season and we had to work hard last night, and I think it just took too much out of us."

The Chargers (25-2) lost to Lansing Catholic in last year's title game and trailed late in the third quarter Saturday before taking command. The Chix didn't score in the fourth until Lance Jongekrijg's layup made it 52-41 with 2:11 left.
