In the polls: Michigan (No. 5), MSU (No. 8) stay put

Michigan and Michigan State remained steady in this week’s USA Today/Amway Coaches Poll, which was released Sunday morning (full rankings below).

The Wolverines (3-0) didn’t lose ground and stayed at No. 5 despite some early struggles in their 45-28 home win over Colorado.

The eighth-ranked Spartans (2-0) went on the road and held on for a 36-28 victory over then-No. 18 Notre Dame on Saturday night.

In the Associated Press top 25, Michigan stayed No. 4, while MSU moved up four spots to No. 8.

Wisconsin, MSU’s opponent next week, moved up two spots in the Coaches Poll to No. 10 after a lackluster 23-17 home win over Georgia State.

Ohio State’s blowout win over Oklahoma catapulted the Buckeyes to the No. 2 spot, behind top-ranked Alabama. Clemson remained at No. 3.

Both Notre Dame and Oklahoma dropped out of the rankings.

The high riser was Louisville, which jumped six spots to No. 4 after hammering previous No. 2 Florida State, 63-20. The Seminoles plummeted 12 spots to No. 14.

Iowa, which lost at home to reigning Football Championship Subdivision champion North Dakota State, fell 14 spots and barely stayed in the poll at No. 25.

Nebraska’s home win over Oregon pushed the Cornhuskers into the rankings at No. 20.

Both MSU and Michigan made minor moves in the Football Writers Association of America/National Football Foundation rankings. The Wolverines climbed a spot to No. 4, while the Spartans went up four places to No. 9.
