Mary Free Bed camp exposes kids to wide range of sports

Mary Free Bed wheelchair sports champ

ALLENDALE, MICH. - Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital offers an annual Junior Wheelchair Sports camp for kids ages 7 through 18. The camp is free and takes place on Grand Valley State University's main campus in Allendale.

"We have kids that don’t have any understanding of what they can do; what their abilities are," said Maria Besta, who has been camp director for 20 years.

The camp is designed to expose young athletes to many different wheelchair sports.

After taking part in the camp, Mary Free Bed doesn't want to just send campers on their way. Campers are able to sign up for teams at the end of camp, after getting a feel for a sport they might want to continue playing.
