Tigers honor 'Mr. I' with Comerica Park outfield grass

At Comerica Park, the team is paying tribute to their late owner, Mike Ilitch.

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers will honor the late Mike Ilitch in plain sight when Friday's home opener rolls around.

The Comerica Park grounds crew has mowed a massive "Mr. I" patch into the centerfield grass for when the Tigers host the Boston Red Sox at 1:10 p.m. Friday. Players and coaches will wear "Mr. I" patches throughout the season as well.

Ilitch, who owned the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings, died Feb. 10 at 87 years old.

The Tigers are scheduled to open the season this afternoon against the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field, but their 4:10 p.m. game could get rained out.
