Detroit Lions 2017 schedule: Arizona Cardinals visit in Week 1

DETROIT, MICH. - Rod Wood got his wish.

Wood said at the NFL owners meetings last month that he asked the league to give the Detroit Lions more home games at the beginning of the season after last year's slow start.

The NFL released its full 2017 schedule Thursday, and the Lions open the season at home against the Arizona Cardinals, then follow with a Monday night game against the Giants in New York.

In all, the Lions play two of their first three games at Ford Field and close the season with what could be another meaningful home game against the Green Bay Packers.

They play the Minnesota Vikings on Thanksgiving for the second straight year, and have three primetime games.

Along with a Week 2 matchup with the Giants, the Lions host the Pittsburgh Steelers in a Week 8 game on Sunday Night Football, and play the Packers in a Monday night game the following week at Lambeau Field.

The Lions have a bye in Week 7.

Last year, the Lions made the playoffs as a wild-card team at 9-7, but they started the season 1-3 and lost their final three regular-season games. The Packers beat the Lions on Sunday Night Football in Week 17 at Ford Field, 31-24, to win the NFC North.

Asked about the schedule before it was released Thursday, Lions general manager Bob Quinn said he thought fans would be "pleasantly surprised."

Other highlights of the Lions' schedule include:

■ A Week 3 home game against the defending NFC champion Atlanta Falcons.

■ No back-to-back road games the entire season.

■ A Christmas Eve game at the Cincinnati Bengals.

■ And a Thanksgiving rematch with the Vikings, the first time the Lions have played the same opponent in consecutive holiday games since they split with the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving in 1979-80.

Last year, the Lions beat the Vikings on Thanksgiving, 16-13, on a 40-yard Matt Prater field goal as time expired.
