Todd Nelson’s run to the Calder Cup may land him an NHL head coaching job.
The Arizona Coyotes have received permission from the Detroit Red Wings to talk to Nelson about the coaching vacancy. The Coyotes parted ways with Dave Tippett this month.
Nelson, 48, was named head coach of the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins in June 2015. Nelson took over for Jeff Blashill after he had been promoted to the Detroit job.
Nelson coached the Griffins to a 44-30-2 record in 2015-16, and went two rounds into the playoffs. This past season saw Nelson guide the Griffins to a 47-23-1 record. The Griffins then went 15-4 in the playoffs, capping a perfect record at home with a Calder Cup clinching Game 6 victory at Van Andel Arena.
Nelson coached 51 games in the NHL as an interim coach for the Edmonton Oilers in 2014-15.
