West Ottawa senior Gustavo Moura
HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) - Gustavo Moura competes in three varsity sports at West Ottawa high school. One for every language that he speaks.
The Panthers' senior is this week's Meijer Scholar Athlete of the Week.
Moura was born in Brazil and grew up in South America before moving to Michigan in elementary school. He speaks his mother's native language of Portugese and he also knows Spanish. He learned to speak English in less than a year.
"I was kind of excited but I was really nervous," Moura said about his first few days living in the US.
"I was nervous, but it worked out fine."
It's worked out fine for Moura on the soccer field. He was named All-District in his last two seasons playing for the Panthers.
He says he's seen soccer grow in the area from when he first moved to Michigan.
"I feel like as I got older there was more and more people I met playing soccer," Moura said.
"I made more and more friends with that."
Moura is a member of the West Ottawa swim team is also on the track and field squad.
He carries a 3.3 grade-point-average and has enrolled in AP classes during his junior and senior years.
Moura plans on studying computer science in college.
