Stafford, wife Kelly welcome baby twins

DETROIT - Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford can add diaper duty to his off-season workout routine.

Stafford's wife Kelly wrote in an Instagram post today that she gave birth to the couple's twin daughters on March 31.

"First night out as a mom and dad!" Kelly Stafford wrote under a picture of her and Matthew. "Our babies were born March 31st and are healthy and happy! Thanks for all the well wishes!"

Stafford, who's coming off one the best seasons of his eight-year career, said in January that he was anxious for fatherhood.

"I’m assuming it’s going to be a big change," he said. "Not as many naps, which is disappointing."

He said Kelly stocked up on books for him to read, but he hadn't yet touched at the time, and said he wasn't going to lean on teammates for advice on being a dad.

"I’ll kind of figure it out on my own, I guess," Stafford said. "Kind of one of those things I think you have to experience to really know. You can get all the advice in the world but every situation I assume is different, and ours will be."

Previously, Kelly Stafford wrote on Instagram that the couple planned to name their daughters Sawyer and Chandler.

Stafford, 29, was an MVP candidate early last season before injuring the middle finger on his throwing hand in December. He led the Lions to eight come-from-behind victories in the fourth quarter or overtime, but the team lost its final four games of the season, including a wildcard game against the Seattle Seahawks.
