TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (WZZM) - For the 13th year, the NHL season begins in Traverse City.

The Minnesota Wild beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 Wednesday to capture the Traverse City Prospects Tournament championship.

The Wings took a 1-0 lead on defenseman Sebastien Piche's second period goal, but the Wild answered with three in the third period to win.

The host Red Wings have never won the tournament in its 13 years of existence. 

This year's Traverse City tournament featured eight NHL teams' future stars including squads made up from the New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues.

The Wings' full squad returns for training camp which opens Saturday in Traverse City.
