BELDING, MICH. - The wait is over, votes have been tallied and Belding Area Schools have come to a final decision on their new mascot: the Black Knights.
During an assembly on Friday morning, the new mascot took the stage for the announcement. According to the Daily News, the costume worn at the assembly was to give students and community members an idea of what the mascot could look like, but this is not the final choice.
MIchael Ostrander, Belding High School principal, told the Daily News that the district's next step is to collect graphic design ideas for primary and secondary art for the mascot.
In January, the district got rid of the previous mascot, the Redskins, after parents complained it was disrespectful to Native Americans. The district opened up a survey to students, parents and community members, it originally listed 10 finalist before the community chose a top three for the final vote.
The Black Knights was the top choice in survey results over the Bengals and Bruins.
