Whitecaps lose five star players to promotion

White hot caps lose 5 stars to Lakeland

COMSTOCK PARK, MICH - The Whitecaps are sending five of their most successful players to High-A in today’s move -- four of which represented the ‘Caps in the Midwest League All-Star Game.

First baseman Blaise Salter, the grandson of former Detroit Tiger Bill Freehan, led the league in Doubles (29) and RBI (53), while finishing second in batting average (.330) during the first half.

Outfielder Cam Gibson, the son of former Tiger Kirk Gibson and former college teammate of Salter at Michigan State University, enjoyed his best professional season to-date, hitting .274 with a team-high 10 HRs and 34 RBI with 12 stolen bases.

Outfielder Jake Robson finished third in the league in batting average (.329) and on-base percentage (.408) during the first half.

On the mound, Austin Sodders led the best pitching staff in the Midwest League, going 7-0 with a 1.40 ERA in 11 games. Jason Foley and his blazing fastball dominated the opposition in the first half, going 3-1 with a 1.55 ERA in 18 games, striking out 36 in just 29 innings.

Salter, Robson, Sodders and Foley all represented the ‘Caps at the Midwest League All-Star Game at Dow Diamond in Midland last Tuesday.

  • OF Jake Robson removed from suspended list and assigned to High-A Lakeland.
  • 1B Blaise Salter assigned to High-A Lakeland.
  • P Austin Sodders assigned to High-A Lakeland.
  • P Tom de Blok added to active roster from Connecticut. He will wear #33.
  • IF David Gonzalez added to active roster from Lakeland. He will wear #4.
  • OF Sam Machonis added to active roster from Connecticut. He will wear #20.
  • OF Elvis Rubio added to active roster from GCL Tigers. He will wear #7.

Among the additions, David Gonzalez is most well-known to the Whitecaps -- having played in parts of three different seasons with the club (’13, ‘15 ’16). The slick-fielding shortstop joins infielder Josh Lester and pitcher Spenser Watkins as the remaining players part of West Michigan’s 2015 Midwest League Championship team.
