COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. -- Blaise Salter hit a two-run single in the sixth inning, leading the West Michigan Whitecaps to a 3-2 win over the South Bend Cubs on Thursday.
The single by Salter, part of a three-run inning, tied the game 2-2 before Cole Bauml hit an RBI single later in the inning.
In the top of the third, South Bend scored on a single by Isaac Paredes that brought home D.J. Wilson. In the following at-bat, Yeiler Peguero scored on a forceout to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead.
Alfred Gutierrez (1-0) got the win with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless, two-hit relief while Matt Swarmer (0-1) took the loss in the Midwest League game. Joe Navilhon retired the side in order for his first save of the season.
With the win, West Michigan improved to 4-1 against South Bend this season.
